Atlanta, GA (September 14, 2009). Celebrating 129 years of continuous service in educating students, Morris Brown College and its National Alumni Association will host the second annual
TOWER OF STRENGTH Awards Gala (formally known as the Legacy Awards) on
Friday, October 16, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel in downtown Atlanta. This black-tie occasion is a “
Circle of Friends: Turning Dreams into Realities” fund raising event for Morris Brown College student scholarships.
Tower of Strength Awards will include the following:
- The Drs. Charles L. Harper / Ann S. Cochran Award for Distinguished Achievement in Education is presented to Dr. Betty L. Siegel;
- The Oscar Burnett Award for Distinguished Achievement in Business is presented to Chef Gerry Garvin and Benny & Eleanor Clark;
- The Drs. Griffin /Hightower/Billings Award for Distinguished Achievement in Science goes to Dr. Craig H. Ricks and Laura & Rutherford Seydel;
- The Steward Wiley/Wesley John Gaines President’s Leadership Award, presented by Dr. Stanley Pritchett, will be given to Dr. C. T. Vivian, and Ezell Brown.
“Morris Brown College re-branded its scholarship fundraising gala in 2008 to reflect the significant and prominence that Fountain Hall and the Morris Brown Clock Tower played in the moral and ethical fabric of our great institution. This tower at Fountain Hall is a symbol of struggle and resolve for Steward Wiley and Wesley John Gaines who were divinely led to call for the establishment of Morris Brown College, the only higher education institution in the State of Georgia founded by African Americans for African Americans,” said George Hopkins, President of the Morris Brown College National Alumni Association.
Honorary Chairs for the 2009 Tower Of Strength Gala are well known in the Atlanta community and they include Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr, Thomas W. Dortch, Herman “Skip” Mason, Erica Qualls, Dr. Betty L. Siegel, and Johnny Furr, Jr. Entertainment and host for the evening is Comedian AJ Jamal. There will be a silent auction, VIP reception, awards dinner and dance. Tickets are $175 per person which includes valet parking. The public is invited to attend and support the students at Morris Brown.
